to celebrate the probably fleeting return of $2.XX9 gas. I figure this might be one of the last times we will see gas in the 2's. If you had something to buy, daily drive for 6 months or less until it goes back over $3.10 and stays there, what would it be?
My choice would be another Grand Wagoneer or FSJ Cherokee

Fleeting is right! We just bumped back to 3.25 from 2.85, it took a couple of weeks to get down that low and one day to get up that high, haha.
I'm thinking maybe some sort of Ford/Lincoln/Mercury sedan with a 390 or 460 in it. Or maybe an older F-150/250 with a 390/460.

1967 Cadillac Eldorado ala Denis Leary.
You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, hot pink, with whale skin hubcaps and all leather cow interior and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights. Yeah! And I'm gonna drive around in that baby at 115 miles an hour, getting 1 mile per gallon , sucking down quarter pounder cheeseburgers from McDonald's in the old-fashioned non- biodegradable Styrofoam containers! And when I'm done suckin' down those grease ball burgers I'm gonna wipe my mouth on the American flag and then toss the Styrofoam containers right out the side, and there ain't a God-damned thing anybody can do about it. You know why? Because we got the bombs, that's why!
Though strangely the 1967 had the small motor available from this era Eldorado a 1970 with the 500 inch V8 would be the preferable swap...

If I were forced to drive a rustang, hands down it would have to be a fox body. I love the fox body cars, but I'm no mustang fan.
That said, I just can't stand people calling the SL a fox body.
I have shut down a pretty large number of jackasses in mustangs that think they can outrun this car. Doesn't matter if we have a standing start, rolling start or pull from at speed. I will shut down most street mustangs*.
This is not a race prepped car, so we're not going to compare apples to oranges.

Is it an SL600? I really someday want one of that 90s generations SL with a manual. My grandpa had an sl550 from that generation, then he had the same thing of the next gen, now he has a CL600 he got with crazy depreciation though it was still pretty expensive

Yes, it's an SL600 Sport (two inches longer, two inches wider, and a little bit faster than the regular SL600)
If you want a manual, you'll have to get the earlier 90's SL320, and it'll be extremely hard to find. All SL600 cars are automatic. There was no R129 SL550, so it would have been just after this generation.
The CL600 is a monster on it's own definitely. I'm glad I got the SL though. I don't think I would have liked a CL or even S class 600 car half as much. The depreciation hurts bad, but for anyone who is in the market, now is the time to buy. Wont make any repair costs cheaper, but for the price of buying the car, it'll work out in your favor still.

Yea, it was the 7 speed DCT, and at 65 - 70 6th gear was too high in the rpm range for good mileage and 7th was too low that it would "bog" a bit and suck fuel down.

He got a 160000+ car for abour half of that so its was a great deal. Ive driven it twice and it was pretty boring but then again, I was driving with my grandparents, not on a backroad or track. It was a great value, though still very expensive. Maybe if I get rich enough I'll find some way to get a manual swap for an sl600 or if I'm crazy and lucky I'll do it with an SL73. Have you done a write up or post about your purchase because I must've missed it. I'd like to see a review of it
JGrabowMSt

10/15/2014 at 12:11 | 1 |
Ouch, he paid upper 5 figures for it? What year is it?
I haven't done a writeup about this car yet, I've been keeping it much lower key compared to the Magnum.
There's less than 100 SL73 cars, I'd leave every single one exactly as it was originally built. This car, I'm leaving it as is. It'll get worn in the correct places with just patina. That's all. I can't bring myself to concourse restore this car, but at the same time, I couldn't let it sit and rot in someone's collection. It needs to be driven. It'll get paint touch up in the places that it gets big dings, but otherwise will keep weathering with time.
Do a manual swap in an SL500, it'll definitely be a lot easier, and wont roast through clutches. If you really wanted to do an SL600, just don't do it to a Sport, get the regular SL600. Look at the manual trans stuff from the Aston Martin V12s.

Already daily a STi. My expectations of fuel economy are about rock bottom. City driving above 15mpg on 93 octane? It's a miracle!
At this point, I just entirely ignore fuel economy in car purchasing decisions. My fiance pays very close attention (Golf TDI DSG) so I continue not caring and use her car for road trips.

My shop installed a TRD supercharger on an LX450, a few months later he sold it to a guy and after signing all the papers the guy asked what kind of mileage he got driving it to where he met him, his reply was "actually it was running really good I got 11.2". Paperwork already signed bud no going back. I agree though I had a 94 FZJ80, I got 14mpg on one trip (I was literally hypermiling it the whole way).

To be honest when I'm driving it I hardly look at the center view mirror, it's so tall anything within 2 lengths of me that isn't lifted I don't see anyway, Otherwise if you get one make sure you either get one that is factory fitted with a rear view camera like mine or get an aftermarket one. The factory one makes backing up a breeze, and the fact that I can grind my 8 ply armored sidewall tires into curbs all day long mixed with that camera make parallel parking a breeze too. Make sure you do the rear locker over ride mod like I did too, that way you can use the locker in 2H and do donuts like a mad man!

This.
My dad had this same exact car only in lime green. It was a company car and the only option it had was the 460 cubic inch engine.
I would take the air cleaner element and lid off and street race it (I was 17....it was way faster then my VW). It wasn't that fast, but the sound of the four barrel secondaries kicking in was awesome. It sounded like it was going to suck the hood into the engine.
I remember going through 20 gallons of gas in an evening, back then gas was 75 cents a gallon. The more I think about it....that was a lot- I only made 2.75 an hour pushing shopping carts around.
